Voters don’t want
new tax increases
Voters sent a clear message to the town and school district at the March 9 election: We can’t afford any additional financial burden at this time. Any major warrant articles that would have cost residents more money were voted down. These include a $30 million road bond, which would have paid for reconstruction and rehabilitation of the town’s roads; a $7.8 million school bond, which would have gone toward renovations at McKelvie Intermediate School, as well as fixes at Memorial and Peter Woodbury; and $1.3 million in contractual increases for teachers and support staff. In the end, this may wind up costing voters more. But with no way to predict the economy, it’s hard to see how issues such as rocky roads, deteriorating schools and teacher contracts will play out. While many of these articles may have looked good on paper, taking advantage of historically low interest rates and available state aid, voters turned out to let officials know that now is not the time to be adding to their tax rates. We applaud voters for getting out to the polls to let their voices be heard. - Editorials published by Neighborhood News Inc. are written by an editorial board.
