Building conduit now paves way for future

Windham selectmen have just a bit more time to decide whether to have a conduit placed under I- 93 where it passes through town. Work begins on that section of the interstate this summer, so if they want the pipe placed, they have to make up their minds quickly.

There’s some debate on total costs to the town, although the state will pay for the construction itself, with the town paying for piping and materials.

Can the town get hard figures on costs in time? We’re not sure. But this is a deal the town shouldn’t pass up.

Bruce Breton, selectmen vice chairman, and others see the value in putting the conduit in now. The benefits are apparent. Not only will the town save a lot of money by not having to do major digging once the highway is finished if they decide to wait until later, but the having the conduit already in place will make it easier when the Wall St. area of town becomes more developed. And development is a given; it’s been predicted all along that it will follow the widening of the I- 93 corridor.

Windham needs to anticipate needs of its residents. Selectmen should get this project going to save money and trouble in the long run, and pave the way for the growth that’s sure to come down the road.
