Not many surprises on this year’s ballot
The March 9 vote went pretty much as most predicted, with lots of “no” votes where spending money was concerned. In Windham, the operating budget for the school was voted down for the second year in a row, so that district will have to get by on last year’s budget. In Pelham, the push for a new high school was rejected, but by quite a narrow margin- Plans for a new fire station for the town center were also scrapped. Maybe next year, the proponents will get their wish, depending on the economy, of course. But in Salem, despite the economy, proponents of a $22 million bond for renovations to three of the town’s elementary schools squeaked by, and work will begin this summer to get those schools some longoverdue repairs. The approval of the Salem school renovation bond was really the only surprise this year. Mainly, the results show that people still are suffering from the recession and just can’t shoulder one more financial burden at this time. Salem has one more voting day coming up on Saturday, March 13, where several millions of dollars of expenditures will be decided on by those attending the meeting. So if you care about your bottom line, and we know you do, you should make it a point to go to Salem High School at 9 a.m. to vote. - Editorials published by Neighborhood News Inc. are written by an editorial board.
